CROSSING THE DELAWARE – 1776

Knowing full well that the contracted German soldiers, known as Hessians, would be drunk on Christmas, General George Washington led a risky, freezing, nighttime crossing of the Delaware River and launched a surprise attack at the British garrison in Trenton.

Revolutionary forces used the passphrase “Victory or Death” to ensure silent, coordinated action.

While Washington was best known as a user of snuff, he also liked to smoke a pipe, especially after a win.
